The Last Apartment

So it’s definitely official. We’re moving to Rochester Hills, Michigan. Jesse and I spent the last two days on the east side of the state looking for a new apartment. We saw six different apartments with varying floor plans and we were able to narrow it down to two. We had a hard time deciding between the two apartments so we went back on Friday to see them again. Let’s just say, the decision was taken out of our hands. How you ask, well let me explain.
The first apartment was a two bedroom townhouse that was three stories. The two bedrooms were on the second floor with the kitchen and living area on the first floor. The third floor was an unfinished basement. Jesse fell in love with this floor plan. He could put the office in the basement and Ian would have his own room. I wasn’t crazy about it because it was more than what we were spending on an apartment now and we didn’t want to spend that much since our plan is to buy a house after a year. Plus the security deposit was one month’s rent. That was steep.
The second apartment was a two bedroom apartment, single floor. We had our choice between first and second floor, but the entire place was on one floor. Our last two apartments were two stories so this seemed small to Jesse, which he wasn’t crazy about. This seemed to be Jesse’s biggest complaint. The apartment complex is surrounded by a nature preserve, which I kind of liked. Plus we could sign an 18 month lease and still take $200 off of what we’re spending now. Financially, this was the better deal.
So we were having an issue deciding which one to do. Jesse wanted to see if we could talk the first place into reducing their security deposit. If they would, it would be more feasible for us to take it. The idea was to go back and look at the floor plans again, during which Jesse would casually bring up the security deposit issue. Jesse wanted to take a second look at the basement and started envisioning how he was going to set up the office down there. During some talks about the construction of the basement, I made a very BIG observation. There wasn’t any electric outlets in the basement. You can image Jesse’s disappointment when I mentioned this observation. Needless to say, we went right to the second complex and filled out an application and had our new address two hours later.
So it’s actually happening. We take possession of the new apartment on December 20th. The plan is to get the movers in here between christmas and new years and then I’ll be moving out there permanently the first full weekend in January. Jesse is actually going out tomorrow since he has to start work on Monday. He’s going to be staying with PJ and Chris until we can get into the apartment, but that should only be about 2 weeks. Now I have to get all the utilities up and running.
So let the headache of moving begin…
