M*A*S*H Quotes

Filed Under (Random Thoughts) by myjaxon on 31-01-2008

One of my authors is having a contest where all you have to do is submit a quote on her blog. Well, I love M*A*S*H and I started looking up quotes, so I thought I would share a few.

If we don’t go crazy once in a while, we’ll all go crazy. — Hawkeye

Radar (in a letter): As usual, I’m writing slowly because I know you can’t read fast.

I am going to live through this even if it kills me. — Klinger

I want foxholes there, there, there and there — each one smartly dug. The kind of hole a man can throw himself into with pride. — Frank

You’ll have to excuse these two, they are themselves today. — Potter

I told you the food here should not be taken internally. — Hawkeye

I can’t do it, I’m not a psychiatrist. I am not screwed up enough. — Hawkeye

Hawkeye, someone came in here and committed a neatness! — Trapper

Book Thoughts

Filed Under (Books, Random Thoughts) by myjaxon on 25-01-2008

I came across this meme at Books Lists Life and thought it would be an interesting to see what everyone else thought as well. I also have this posted at my book review blog, so you can leave comments at either site. If you haven’t been there yet, if you like to read, you should check out Literary Escapism. I’ve started a book challenge - 50 new authors in 2008, so I’ve been reviewing a bunch of books lately.
—————————————————-

  1. Which book do you irrationally cringe away from reading, despite seeing only positive reviews?
    • My husband loved Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson and he really wants me to read it. I’ve added it to my TBR pile, but for some reason I’m really hesitate to read it. I’m not really sure why.
  2. If you could bring three characters to life for a social event (afternoon tea, a night of clubbing, perhaps a world cruise), who would they be and what would the event be?
    • Nathaniel from Anita Blake series (Hamilton) – who wouldn’t want him to be with him if only for a little bit. He’s sexy as hell and as sweet as can be. He doesn’t mind cooking or cleaning and he just wants everyone to be happy.
    • Jamie Fraser from the Outlander series (Gabaldon) - I don’t care what he said, just as long as he talked. He could just read a story and I would be happy.
    • Jim from the Aisling Grey series (MacAlister) – It wouldn’t be a dull or quiet lunch with him around.
  3. (Borrowing shamelessly from the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde): you are told you can’t die until you read the most boring novel on the planet. While this immortality is great for awhile, eventually you realize it’s past time to die. Which book would you expect to get you a nice grave?
    • I love the movies, but the only novel that comes to mind after reading this question is Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice. I started reading it and it was just so long winded, wordy, over descriptive that I got bored with reading and I moved on to something else. I could probably get through it if I had to, but I think I would fall asleep before the end of it. I’ve been told the following novels are better, but I want to get to them in order, so I have to finish this one before I can go to the next one.
  4. Come on, we’ve all been there. Which book have you pretended, or at least hinted, that you’ve read, when in fact you’ve been nowhere near it?
    • Off the top of my head, at this moment, I can’t think of a book that I’ve “pretended or at least hinted at” that I’ve read. I’m sure there is one at some time (thinking back to 11th grade literature class), but I can’t think of one right now.
  5. As an addition to the last question, has there been a book that you really thought you had read, only to realize when you read a review about it/go to ‘reread’ it that you haven’t? Which book?
    • I haven’t come across a book that I’ve thought I’ve read but haven’t, but I have come across books I didn’t realize I read and have. I had someone recommend a book to me and it sounded really interesting so I borrowed it from the library and I had actually read it a couple months earlier. I want to say it was a Sherrilyn Kenyon book, but I’m not sure.
  6. You’re interviewing for the post of Official Book Advisor to some VIP (who’s not a big reader). What’s the first book you’d recommend and why? (if you feel like you’d have to know the person, go ahead of personalize the VIP)
    • The first book I would recommend would be Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. It’s a historical fiction novel that involves war, romance, espionage, and adventure. It’ll attract anyone who gives it the time of day. Gabaldon spends time and energy including actual facts and figures into her novel that adds a hint of realism to it.
  7. A good fairy comes and grants you one wish: you will have perfect reading comprehension in the foreign language of your choice. Which language do you go with?
    • That’s such a trick question because I want to learn so many languages. I already know Spanish, not well, but I know it. I still want to learn French, German, Italian, and Gaelic. It would be awesome to read the original Republic or Illiad in Greek. I don’t think I could pick just one, so I would try and wish for the ability to read whatever I could regardless of the language, but maybe not being able to speak or write the language.
  8. A mischievous fairy comes and says that you must choose one book that you will reread once a year for the rest of your life (you can read other books as well). Which book would you pick?
    • Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White. When I was younger, I also made sure I read this book at least once a year. There were times I would pick it up and read it multiple times, but I always read it once a year. I can’t remember when I stopped, but this popped into my head when I read this question.
  9. I know that the book blogging community, and its various challenges, have pushed my reading borders. What’s one bookish thing you ‘discovered’ from book blogging (maybe a new genre, or author, or new appreciation for cover art-anything)?
    • That there are a lot of people out there who blog about books. That I can find suggestions for novels and I don’t have to get all of my ideas off of Amazon’s top picks.
  10. That good fairy is back for one final visit. Now, she’s granting you your dream library! Describe it. Is everything leather bound? Is it full of first edition hardcovers? Pristine trade paperbacks? Perhaps a few favorite authors have inscribed their works? Go ahead-let your imagination run free.
    • My dream library would be a huge room with shelves upon shelves of novels ranging from historic fiction to romance to urban fantasy to nonfiction. William Shakespeare, Lord Byron, Sylvia Platt, Laurell K Hamilton, Keri Arthur, J.R.R. Tolkien, Mary Shelley, Edgar Allen Poe, and Hans Christian Andersen would be just a few there. I would have all the classics in leather bound hardcovers while all the trashy romance and more modern novels would be in pristine trade paperbacks.
    • I would have a computer monitor that is hooked up to multiple speakers spread throughout the room that would be constantly playing our home music stream so I would never have to listen to a single commercial while I’m reading. There would be a section for all my husband’s tech books and my son’s collection and they would both be good little boys and leave mama alone while she was reading. There would be couches, chaise lounges, bean bags, and floor pillows spread throughout the room. There would be a huge window seat that I could lay down on that would overlook a gorgeous flower garden that overlooked a pond (kind of something you would find on a rich lord’s country estate in England).

Lonely Weekend

Filed Under (Ian, Jesse) by myjaxon on 19-01-2008

It’s really quiet this weekend. Ian is off visiting with his Nana, so there is no one here running around (yes, he’s starting to run, however, not well) jabbering. All of his toys are put away and I don’t have to make a single meal if I don’t want to. Jesse can fend for himself. It’s kind of odd. When mom first asked if she could have Ian for a weekend, I was really excited. I would take him down on Friday while Jesse was at work, we’d have the weekend to ourselves and then on Monday, while Jesse was at work, I would have the entire apartment to myself. Do you know when the last time was that I had the entire place to myself? I was about 20 lbs heavier with Ian kicking my bladder. It’s been a year since I had any time to myself, with no one wanting attention. Granted, Jesse doesn’t require that much attention and we can sit in the same room for hours without talking, but it’s just not the same.

Needless to say, my glorious plans were not going to happen. Mom’s car isn’t working so we’re meeting halfway on Monday instead and Jesse was planning on working from home since he has a skin doctor appointment. <sigh> It was a great dream while it lasted.

Anyway, so far, it’s been a nice relaxing weekend. I’m hoping to get the office cleaned up and some other chores, as well as figure out what we’re going to do for Ian’s first birthday. I can’t wait until we get a house and we can actually have it at our own place. The apartment is too small, so we’re trying to find someplace that will give Ian a place to play, but still be a good place for lunch. I think we have it narrowed down to a couple of places, but I want to check them out before I make any final decisions.

Overall, nothing much is going on with me at the moment. Between Ian and Jesse, I really don’t have that much time for myself. My time usually comes in the form of reading or tooling around online.

QUICK UPDATE:  Not 5 minutes after publishing this, Jesse asked me to make HIM chocolate milk since I do it so much better than him.  It’s not like there is a specific science to pouring milk into the maker and adding the cocoa powder.  And people wonder why I say I have two kids at home.   :)

Review: Superbad

Filed Under (Reviews) by myjaxon on 18-01-2008

Jesse and I learned a valid lesson tonight….do not watch Superbad while trying to play Puzzle Pirates. There were so many funny scenes, it kept distracting us from the puzzles and we actually lost one battle due to the movie. Initially, I wasn’t too crazy about it, but after watching it, it’s really amusing. If you haven’t seen it, go get it tonight. Now I can’t wait to see Juno, since Michael Cera is in that movie as well.
